ABOUT THE PLAY

Set in the Emo-Christian, homeschool stew of the early aughts, TARTS is a 75-minute musical comedy about Amy and Michelle, two 13-year-olds determined to save the world with their menses. Inspired by scripture and the joint arrival of their periods, they begin incorporating their blood into baked goods, quickly discovering its' supernatural qualities. People are healed, global warming halts, and Sk8r Hottie Number One finally reciprocates Amy's crush.

Just as their dreams begin to materialize, their haunted bodies confront them with disheartening truths.  Whether their corporeal needs and spiritual goals can coexist becomes the urgent question- one that must be explored through song, mimed figure- skating and at least one Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman cameo.

Eschewing caricature, TARTS is a playful, personal inquiry into the presumed dichotomies of self and other, religious and secular, physical and spiritual, earthly and sublime.
